Religious Studies Islam and Ethics

UPDATED 20160324 12:06:53

In the AS course you will complete one Islam and one ethics unit. The Islam section looks at what life was like in Arabia before the founding of Islam and the influence of Judaism, Christianity and Paganism on Islam as a new religion. You will look at the life of Muhammad (pbuh) and why it is still important to Muslims today, our relationship with Allah and key Muslim beliefs. You will also research texts from the Quran and understand how Muslims make moral decisions. The Ethics section looks at what we mean by right and wrong and why something may be right for one person but not for another, where do we get our morals from and the influence of society on our values and morals. You will look at Utilitarianism - doing the greater good for the greater number and Natural Moral Law - the idea that God has set down laws for us to follow. Ethical theories are then applied to modern issues such as genetic engineering, abortion, euthanasia and war and peace. In the A2 course you will complete one Islam and one Ethics unit. The Islam section looks at the articles of belief - the oneness of God, Messengership and Life after Death. You will look at key scriptures from the Quran to find out Muslim attitudes towards Jews and Christians, family, divorce and money. You will look at the role of women in Islam and will go onto look at Jihad and its misconceptions, making links to events such as 9/11. You will study different Muslims groups and their origins e.g. Sunni, Shiah and Sufi. The Ethics section looks at whether our actions are pre-determined, do we actually have free will and what is conscience. Christian and non-religious theories are applied to issues such as sex, relationships, environment and business in a way that is relevant to today's society. Both units at A2 allow opportunities for you to form your own opinions on these topics.
