This subject enables students to become skilled at both literary and language study. On the course you will be encouraged to read and analyse literary texts including poems, plays and novels. You will also apply technical language knowledge to the analysis of texts and produce pieces of original writing. It is often suited to students who already have a high level of confidence in the study of English. The first year of this course is designed to encourage integrated literary and linguistic analysis. You will study a range of literary and non-literary texts such as poetry, drama and non-fiction prose. There will also be the opportunity to develop your own writing skills within given frameworks including journalistic writing. The study of spoken English is also a significant part of the course. In year two the focus is on comparative studies and will demand the study of paired texts such as Shakespeare and another drama text. There will be continued opportunities for you to develop your own writing skills including the possibility of TV script writing (soap operas). Other options available in the second year include women's journalism and poetry.
