AS and A Level music technology courses offer you opportunities to extend your music technology skills. Practice in the development of musical techniques of composition in a wide range of styles and genres are an integral part of the course, as is the development of listening and other aural skills. The course is a well-balanced and accessible course of study in Music Technology which will enable you to develop skills, challenge and extend them.

Name: Music Technology A Level Qualification title: GCE A Level Qualification type: GCE A/AS Level or equivalent Assessment A Level Component 1: Recording Externally assessed. 60 Marks. 20% of the A Level. Assessment: One recording will be made from a chosen list of songs provided by Pearson, consisting of a minimum of five compulsory instruments and two additional instruments. The total recording time of the music must be in-between 3 to 3 ½ minutes. A logbook will be completed and submitted with the recording. Component 2: Technology-based composition Externally assessed. 60 Marks. 20% of the A Level. Assessment: One technology-based composition will be completed from a set of three briefs set by Pearson. It will focus on synthesis, sampling/audio manipulation and creative effects. The composition should last three minutes. A logbook will be completed and submitted with the composition. Component 3: Listening and Analysing Written examination externally assessed. 75 Marks. 25% of the A Level. Assessment: One written paper of 1 ½ hours comprising of two sections: Section A: Listening and analysing - four questions, each based upon unfamiliar commercial recordings. (40 Marks) Section B: Two essay questions. One comparison question, which uses two unfamiliar commercial recordings. (15 Marks) Essay two uses a final unfamiliar commercial recording to get you to evaluate the wider musical context of the piece. Component 4: Producing and Analysing Written practical examination externally assessed. 105 Marks. 35% of the A Level. Assessment: One practical written exam of 2 ¼ hours comprising of two sections: Section A: Producing and analysing – five questions related to audio and MIDI that will require both written and practical tasks. (85 Marks) Section B: Extended written response – one essay on a specific mixing scenario, signal path, effect or music technology hardware unit. (20 Marks) AS Level The AS Level qualification follows the same format as A Level; consisting of the four components of Recording, Composition, Listening and Analysing and Producing and Analysing. The requirements for each component are however reduced, with shorter tasks and time expectations for the various tasks set.
