Mathematics A Level

UPDATED 20161206 12:17:47

You will learn to use your knowledge of mathematical facts, concepts and techniques in a variety of contexts. You will construct rigorous mathematical arguments and proofs through use of precise statements, logical deduction and inference and by manipulation of mathematical expressions. You will use your knowledge of standard mathematical models to represent situations in the real world; recognise and understand given representations involving standard models and learn to discuss the assumptions made and how to refine the models. You will use the results of calculations to make predictions or comment on the context and, where appropriate, read critically and comprehend longer mathematical arguments or examples of applications.

Course information

Name: Mathematics A Level Qualification title: GCE A Level Qualification type: GCE A/AS Level or equivalent Assessment Mathematics at A Level is divided into three main areas: Core, Mechanics, Statistics. Core Mathematics is the natural extension to GCSE, and ideas such as algebra and trigonometry are extended and new topics such as calculus are introduced and explored. It is theoretical, but is expected to explain ‘real-life’ situations. Mechanics is the study of the motion of objects and how they respond to forces acting upon them. Many of the ideas found in mechanics are used in the fields of cybernetics, robotics, sports science, design & technology, engineering and physics. Statistics is the analysis and representation of information along with the ability to justify your conclusions. You will extend your knowledge of probability to include distributions and perform significance tests to further your statistical processing skills. Students who opt to take Further Mathematics as well as Mathematics will look into these areas in much greater depth over the 2 year course. They will be studying both Mathematics and Further Mathematics at the same time over the 2 years. Awarding Pearson Edexcel Created 20160201 14:09:48 Updated 20161206 12:17:47
