Name: English Language A Level Qualification title: GCE A Level Qualification type: GCE A/AS Level or equivalent Assessment A Level Unit 1: Language Variation (9EN0/01) Written Exam. 2 hour 15 mins. 35% of A Level. Section A – Individual Variation: one question on two unseen 21st century linked texts/data. Students produce an extended comparative response. Section B – Variation over Time: one question on two thematically linked unseen texts/data, from two different periods. Students produce an extended comparative response. Unit 2: Child Language (9EN0/02) Written Exam. 1 hour. 20% of A Level. One question based on a set of unseen data – either spoken or written. Students prepare an extended response. Unit 3: Investigating Language (9EN0/03) Written Exam. 1 hour 45 mins. 25% of A Level. A subtopic will be pre-released in January before the exam providing a steer for students’ research. Section A: one question on unseen data. Students must answer the question on the subtopic they have researched. Section B: one evaluative question. Students must answer the question on the subtopic they have researched and must make connections with data from their investigation. Students produce an extended response. Coursework: Crafting Language (9EN0/04) Internally assessed/externally moderated 20% of A Level. Two pieces of original writing from the same genre differentiated by function and genre and/or audience (1500-2000 words) One commentary, reflecting on the two pieces of original writing and making connections with research undertaken (1000 words) AS Level Unit 1: Language: Context and Identity (8EN0/01) Written Exam. 1 hour 30 mins. 50% of AS Level. Section A – Language and Context: one question on a small set of thematically linked unseen data. Students prepare an extended comparative response. Section B – Language and Identity: one question on unseen 21st-century data. Students prepare an extended response. Unit 2 Child Language (9EN0/04) Written Exam. 1 hour 30 mins. 50% of AS Level.
