GCE A Level in Religious Studies

UPDATED 20160118 15:57:44

Religious Studies A Level. Religious Studies is the academic field of multi-disciplinary, secular study of religious beliefs, behaviours, and institutions. During this course you will have the opportunity to study a range of widely disputed issues: How can God and evil coexist? Where have we come from and where are we going? Is there life after death? Do miracles really happen? Can our experiences be described as religious? Is atheism on the rise? You will develop a varied and dynamic set of skills, giving you a firm foundation for a future in an ever-changing world that continues to be shaped by religion. You will learn how to question, argue, debate and develop your view in an open-minded and challenging environment. In the first year you will have a brief introduction to the World Religions and will then examine issues about the nature of our beliefs and experiences, alongside study of the big debates between Science and Religion. In the second year, you will build upon your skills and you will consider explanations for common challenges to religion, such as where does evil come from and can we ever talk accurately about God? You will have the opportunity to study theories of life after death in great detail and you will develop your knowledge through close analysis of religious texts and application of historical, ethical, and philosophical perspectives.
