Architecture: Saxon and Norman Architecture - Great and Enduring Buildings

UPDATED 20160115 15:06:00

In their churches the Anglo-Saxons built simply but strongly, with fascinating decorative effects. The Normans then produced buildings across the land, often on a grand scale. The extraordinary Norman building programme ranged from fortifications like London's White Tower, to monasteries such as Reading, and great cathedrals including Ely and Durham where the power of this Norman work can still be experienced today.
