Each text we study is a piece of a jigsaw. 20th Century poetry is this jigsaw and MacNeice will nestle beside his immediate contemporaries; Auden, Spender, C Day Lewis, Betjeman. MacNeice was an uneasy 'Ulsterman' by birth and childhood, and this Irish dimension made him a favourite of later Irish poets Heaney, Mahon and Michael Longley. Our challenge in this course is to lay hold of his rippling scintillating insights and relish his unique 'dance of words.'
