It will start by looking at the demise of the post-war settlement in Italy after the 'Tangentopoli' ('Bribesville') corruption scandal in the early 1990s, then assess the rise of Silvio Berlusconi , the nature of his appeal and the 'cultural' as well as 'political' impact of the Berlusconi phenomenon on Italian society. Finally, it will look at the fortunes of the Berlusconi governments, its wider reception outside Italy, and its lasting legacy for Italy.
