Expressionism - this Art History course in Sevenoaks will provide participants with a sound art historical overview of Expressionism. The term is applied to art in which traditional ideas of naturalism are abandoned in favour of distortions and exaggerations of shape or colour that urgently express the artist's emotion. The course is designed to familiarize you with two major expressionistic movements of the early 20th century: "Die Brücke" (The Bridge) and "Der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider) and their immediate forerunners including Vincent van Gogh, Edvard Munch and Paul Gauguin. The course is aimed at those who have an admiration for art and a general interest in art history. No prior knowledge is required. The course covers a broad range of art works in order to give students a good insight in the above period. We will also focus on the historic, technical and biographical contexts of the discussed art works so that students get to know the circumstances about how, why, when and where the art work was produced.
