Photography A-level is a qualification that demonstrates an eye for composition, creative flair and modern conceptual thinking. These are essential attributes for anyone interested in a career in the creative industries, which are currently the UK’s largest employers. Students will be expected to work exceptionally hard to create high quality and meaningful photographs inspired by a range of exciting, contemporary and often controversial artists and themes. Students will need to match the time spent in class with independent photography and sketchbook work in order to create work of the quality and quantity necessary for A-level. They will need to visit art galleries, exhibitions, and museums independently as well as on organised school trips. Students are advised to gain primary research by contacting photographers first hand and finding out for themselves how they work. Photography students need to have access their own SLR camera ideally both film and digital, their own external hard drive, boxes of photographic printing paper and lightsensitive paper, as well an extensive range of their own materials for journal making, and an A2 portfolio for storing and displaying prints.
