Film is still an extremely important medium, as the billions made every year attests. This course aims to celebrate the power of its visual language and ability to entertain, but also through this help explain how we respond to the modern world. It is not an exaggeration to say that today most of the information we get comes from moving image broadcasts, whether on the internet or TV, and film was the earliest form of this. Therefore, understanding how film works - how it primarily engages our emotions rather than our brains - is a vital part of understanding how we respond to the modern world. Students will be challenged to embrace foreign film cultures, the concept of spectatorship and the work of renowned directors; still at the course s heart, though, is the analysis of film language and how it affects us, so that through spectatorship especially the course still helps us understand how the moving image influences us.
