If you choose to study English Language at A-level you will immerse yourself in the nuts and bolts of our language: where our words come from and how they are formed; all the different meanings they can hold and the rules we use (and break) to string them together in written and spoken texts that can forge relationships, persuade, amuse, offend, delight, soothe and inspire. Why should you study it: - Because it's fascinating think how often or language appears in conversation - commenting on accents and dialects, accuracy or appropriateness, swearing, or just wondering where a word has come from. - Because it's important - As English becomes the chief means of communication between nations, it is crucial to ensure that it is taught accurately and efficiently, and to understand changes in its structure and use. - Because it's fun think of all theword games that exist: Crosswords, Scrabble, Boggle, Hangman, anagrams, Countdown - Because it's useful Understanding the complexities of language gives us the power to persuade others, to explain things clearly, to surprise and entertain and to control our own destinies. It also helps us to recognise the tricky ways people use it to influence us, and to win arguments. Entry requirements To study A-levels you need at least 5 A*- C grades at GCSE, including designated B grades and an average GCSE Score of at least 5. The designated B grade for this subject is English Language.
