GCE A Level in Media Studies

UPDATED 20160114 12:51:03

Exam Board: AQA This course is a rigorous look at the role of the different media in modern society, and its influence on the way we think, conceptualise reality, spend our money, and live. Although it would be ideal for those wishing to follow careers in the media areas outlined below, the course’s practical elements also appeal to students of an imaginative or creative disposition, and those looking for careers which will involve a lot of contact with the media. We aim to produce students who can analyse the media critically and autonomously, take an interest in current affairs, and are able to use their knowledge to create examples of their own work using the different media. Media Studies and Film Studies are an excellent complement to each other, and contribute towards each other significantly.

Name: GCE A Level in Media Studies Qualification title: GCE A Level in Media Studies Qualification type: Assessment A2 Level Module 3: Critical Perspectives (2 hour written paper) Students examine specific texts within two media topics, looking at their meaning in the context of the economic, political and social issues surrounding them. Again, candidates will carry out a cross-media study of texts across the three media platforms, using these case studies to answer set questions in the exam, and using the skills learnt in this unit to critically analyse an unseen text. The following two topics are offered in this module: • Representations • The Impact of New / Digital Media At A2 Level students will refine their critical faculties to look not only at how media texts are produced, but also at the factors which influence their production, such as media values, political, economic and social climate, media theories and examination of the major issues and debates surrounding the modern media. Again this will involve the in-depth analysis of specific media texts and production of practical projects to show how well students understand the conceptual framework within the media. A2 Level Module 4: Research and Production Candidates build on their skills from AS study to investigate a media theme/text in more depth and realise a production piece reflecting this research. The unit has two sections: • A critical investigation of a contemporary media issue of the candidate’s choice • A linked production piece which demonstrates the candidates’ understanding of the issue they have investigated further.
