The Sketchbook as Visual Diary

UPDATED 20160107 08:45:28

Use a sketchbook to record everyday life, dreams, memories, personal archives .. explore different materials and approaches to develop drawings. A great course to develop a portfolio or a platform for work in other classes or personal projects. The 'sketchbook' is used to generate imagery, like a visual diary. It can be a starting point to developing ideas and new work but also assembled as an artwork in its own right- as a new genre of art. Students will use their own narratives or stories through personal objects, dreams, photos, poems, to develop images in any way, drawing, collage, cutting, folding, stitching, painting and drawing. Old masters like Matisse Turner, Marc Chagall, Picasso and Goya have used sketchbooks to underpin much of their work and in more recent times Andy Warhol, Ellsworth Kelly and many others have elevated the sketchbook into the status of art object. The sketchbook is explored via exercises in its widest sense to include: Photography, Graphic Design, Sculpture, 3D Design, Textiles and Fashion, book making/binding and mixed media.
