It is well-known that, after being banished from Malta, Caravaggio made his journey to Sicily (1608), where he spent the last years of his career and turned his art into a tragic call for forgiveness. Also Anthony Van Dyck, still in his twenties, visited Sicily (1623-24) and made a substantial step forward in his glorious career: he served the Viceroy and survived the epidemic plague raging in Palermo. Learn more about two contrasting stories that illuminate the beginnings of the Baroque, with special attention to the use of light to create emotions. If you enjoyed - or wished to visit - the exhibition 'Van Dyck in Sicily' (Dulwich Picture Gallery, 2012), you will also enjoy this course.
