Lindy Hop originated in Harlem, New York. It developed from the Charleston in response to the big band sounds of the swing era (late 1920s to mid 1940s). As popular music changed thereafter Lindy gave way to the simpler Jive and Rock 'n' Roll. With the resurgence of performance and appreciation of the music of the swing era Lindy has enjoyed a corresponding revival. The Shim Sham Shimmy is a routine danced without partner in the Lindy Hop style. The routine was and still is used as a finale to a Lindy event, when everyone dances the routine.
