The anniversary of the beginning of WWI is an appropriate time to explore the art of the period. We will look at the initial enthusiasm, including the Vorticists and the identification with war as a necessary clearing away of the old world; the reality of the trenches and official war art and artists at home, women artists and pacifists who had no official status. At the end of the war sculpture came into focus; we will look at some of the more unusual war memorials. A visit to the Imperial War Museum will form part of the study day.
