This course is designed for learners who have already studied Italian for at least five years or more and have a good understanding of the Italian language. The main aim of the course is to teach learners to use and manipulate the language to high standards. The course will be based on interactive and communicative methods and will be taught entirely in Italian. The focus of the course will be the development of speaking skills through discussions on a wide range of topics including current affairs, social issues, literature and cinema. Each lesson, however, will comprise the revision of specific points of grammar and some activities to improve and expand the vocabulary. Active participation to class activities and discussions will be strongly encouraged. There is no formal examination at the end of this course, but continuous assessment will be performed through class activities and weekly homework, which will include written assignments, grammar exercises, research on specific topics, listening to short video clips and presentations. By the end of this course the participants will be able to: express confidently their own opinions on a variety of topics; read and comment articles from the national press; read some modern/contemporary literature and perform a critical appraisal; appreciate the differences between regions and their inhabitants; use the language outside the context of the classroom; construct more complex sentences using a variety of verb forms and tenses
