New specification for September What will I study? The A-Level consists of three components: - Component 1: Telling stories written exam - Component 2: Exploring conflict written exam - Component 3: Making connections non-exam assessment Units include: - Key aspects of both established and new literacy texts - Points of view and genre in prose fiction - Voice and identity in poetry: interaction and conflict in drama - The study of representation of place in an anthology of non-literacy texts, including spoken language, media texts and new technologies - Contemporary approaches to the study of a range of literary and non-literary discourses and texts The texts offered for study range from the 16th century to the present day. Due to the wide range of texts studied and the in-depth focus on skills development, this A-Level provides a good base if you are intending to study subjects at university such as Journalism, Law, Media and/or Film. In the first year, you will study a selection of texts on the subject of Paris, France. You will also study one of the following novels: Frankenstein, Dracula, The Handmaid's Tale or The Lovely Bones. This will be under the general heading of 'Imagined Worlds'. You will also study a number of poems by the following authors: John Donne, Robert Browning, Seamus Heaney and Carol Ann Duffy. There is no coursework in the first year: instead there will be two examinations at the end of the first year. In the second year, you will study Drama choosing from one of the following plays: Othello, All My Sons, A Streetcar Named Desire or The Herd. You will complete a project on a language subject of your choice, worth 20% of your final mark. There will also be a re-creative writing element based on one of the following books: The Great Gatsby, The Kite Runner, Into The Wild or the Suspicions of Mr. Whicher. There are two exams at the end of the second year.
