Key areas developed include research and analytical skills, creativity, time management, technical knowledge - including CAD/CAM, practical skills and problem solving. It also teaches students the benefits of working both independently and as part of a team. Product Design offers students the opportunity to develop both academic and practical skills in a well-equipped environment. During the 3D Design AS course students are given topics or areas to investigate which will develop their design and practical skill. Current themes are ‘Flat-pack speakers’ and ‘Pewter cast jewellery’. As they progress to A2 students will choose a project theme that interests them. Previous projects have included furniture such as tables and chairs, musical instruments, sports equipment, children’s play furniture and objects involving mechanical engineering.
