At AS and A2 Level you will develop your ability to understand the spoken and written language and to use the language for the purposes of communication and the exchange of information and ideas. You will gain an awareness and understanding of the culture, society and political life of Germany and German-speaking countries. The course is demanding, but enjoyable and stimulating. The language learning skills you develop will be of use should you wish to acquire knowledge of other languages in the future.The knowledge you gain of German and European culture, society and politics may well be of benefit in other areas of study, hence the study of any language at this level compliments any combination of subjects.

Name: German AS Level Qualification title: GCE AS Level in German Qualification type: Assessment The AS examination consists of 2 units:Unit 1: Spoken Expression and Response (Speaking) - you will discuss a topic chosen from the four general topic areas.Unit 2: Understanding and Written Response (Listening, Reading and Writing) - Your understanding of recorded material and authentic texts is tested by a variety of short tasks. Writing skills are assessed through, e.g. a letter, report or article based on a short printed German-language stimulus.The A2 examination consists of 2 further units:Unit 3: Understanding and Spoken Response (Speaking) - You will discuss a variety of controversial issues.Unit 4: Research, Understanding and Written Response - Your research and written skills are tested through 2 essays. A short translation from English into German allows you to show your ability to manipulate the grammar.
