A-levels will be reformed from September 2015 teaching, so the information below shows likely topics and tasks.English Language is an exciting, analytical subject that explores all aspects of spoken, written and electronic language. Students will learn the tools and terminology of linguistic description, to respond to texts' meanings, contexts, purposes and representations. Much of the content can be applied to everyday linguistic interactions. While students will have the chance to produce some of their own writing, an interest in how English is used in daily life will be needed, along with a desire to analyse its various components in detail.Analysing texts (exam)Students will be introduced to the skills of textual analysis - writing systematically about the language used in texts. 'Texts' will be taken in a broad sense and will include written texts (for example fiction, opinion journalism, personal letters, children's early writing), spoken texts (for example transcripts of friends interacting, politicians addressing audiences, workplace conversations) and electronic (for example emails, social network postings, websites). Students will be required to use accurate terminology to describe specific features of language.Texts will be the starting point for application of wider linguistic concepts in essay responses, using evidence to engaging in various topic areas:Language and Gender - how males and females communicate differently in conversation and how gender is represented in written texts.+ Language and Power - how power dynamics affect conversations and how texts utilise power to address audiences.+ Language Variation - how use of language is affected by the region, nationality, class or ethnicity of the language producer.+ Language Change - how English developed in past centuries, how it is developing now and how opinions vary towards these changes.+ Child Language Acquisition - how children progress through stages of acquiring language and how adult input
