The first year will put the emphasis on practical exploration across a wide range of materials and media. You will be encouraged to experiment with many different mark making processes and systems of recording. To this end drawing, painting and printmaking will play major parts in your practical work. But lens - based imagery and time - based media (video)will also be engaged with. Developing your understanding by becoming familiar with the practice and purpose of a diverse range of past and present artists will also be integral to your approach. You will be encouraged to visit exhibitions and document your response to the work that you encounter, as well as collecting further examples from websites and other media. Contextualising understanding, making connections between different ideas, artists and the time that they are in is also a valuable part of your development. The course will be made up from a series of projects, workshops and assignments that will link to the assessment schedule.
