Michael Palin recently said, “Geography is the subject which holds the key to our future" and, if you study A Level Geography, you will certainly be better prepared to understand the issues currently affecting our planet such as climate change and sea level rise. In addition to knowing about our planet and its people, those who choose to study A Level Geography will learn many life skills including an ability to think critically, research and communicate their thoughts through writing and other means. A Level Geography consists of the following components. Physical Geography Section A: Water and carbon cycles Section B: either Hot desert environments and their margins or Coastal systems and landscapes Section C: either Hazards or Ecosystems under stress or Cold environments Written examination: 2 hours 30 minutes, 96 marks 40% of A Level Human Geography Section A: Global systems and global governance Section B: Changing places Section C: either Contemporary urban environments or Population and the environment or Resource security Written examination: 2 hours 30 minutes, 96 marks, 40% of A Level Geography investigation Students complete an individual investigation which must include data collected in the field. The individual investigation must be based on a question or issue defined and developed by the student relating to any part of the specification content. 3,000–4,000 words, 35 marks, 20% of A Level, marked by teachers, moderated by AQA Recent field trips have been to Dorset and Isle of Wight in order to support the fieldwork investigation component of the A Level Geography course.
