Food Technology allows students to demonstrate their creativity when making food products as well as gaining an understanding of food science and nutrition and the complex relations between design, materials, manufacturing and marketing. The course contains theory and practical work which is recorded and evaluated in a design portfolio. Topics include knowledge of food nutrition, health promotion, and diet and health. This allows students to explore current recommendations and initiatives. Assessment is based across five main areas: investigating and research, development of ideas and proposals, practical making and modelling, evaluating/testing and communication. Key areas developed include knowledge of healthy eating, awareness of the current health issues faced by the population, practical cooking skills, developing research and analytical skills, exploring creatively in designing new recipes, improving confidence and knowledge of ingredients. It also teaches the students the benefits of working both independently and as part of a team.
