English GCSE - Evening

UPDATED 20151208 20:04:56

The course covers 4 main units; Reading; Writing; Studying Written Language and Spoken Language. The Reading and Writing units are externally assessed in June; as other GCSE's at schools are. The other two units are modular; and are assessed in the classroom; with your tutor. In the Studying Written Language unit you are tasked with producing two pieces of creative writing; one descriptive; and one narrative (story). These are only short pieces of writing; and are assessed over one hour each. These units really give you a chance to get your creative juices flowing; improve your writing skills; and enjoy English! You also study a novel in this unit; this year it is Robert Cormier's "Heroes". You will have to write a short essay from a question given to your class. "Heroes" is a great novel about a young man returning from the war; searching for his sweet-heart and looking for revenge on the man who hurt her.In the Spoken Language unit you will take part in 3 speaking and listening excercies; and complete one essay on a situation where people are recorded and transcribed. This allows you to learn about how people's speech changes depending on the situation they are in; and also some technical terminology that you can show off!
