M10C06A: To explore the impact of the Norman Conquest on English society, how English kingship and law developed, and to study how far Magna Carta and successive attempts to limit the powers of the monarch and his government succeeded. To understand how terribly the Black Death afflicted England in 1349 and then transformed its society and economy, eroding feudal relationships and tenures changed many people's attitudes towards life, death, salvation and the Church. To explore the nature and significance of Peasants' Revolts from 1381 to 1450; of the Hundred Years' War against France; and of the "Wars of the Roses" (but not detailed narratives of these wars nor of the military History of this period). There is no formal level; this course is for everyone interested in the subject.
