Access4Learning is designed for young people with high support needs. It is spread over 4 or 5 days per week in the first year and 4 days in subsequent years. Students on this programme are likely to have severe learning difficulties; some on the Autistic spectrum and others with profound and complex needs. They are likely to still need a good deal of support for learning and for personal care at College. On this programme students will develop independent living skills and continue to develop literacy, numeracy and IT skills as appropriate. They will also learn how to be more independent and gain confidence in the outside world. Students have the chance to practise vocational skills like catering, horticulture, construction, performing arts, motor vehicle and bike maintenance, business, IT, media, and enterprise. All students on the course take a range of sports and learn about keeping fit and healthy. Students develop creative skills by taking part in activities such as dance, drama, creative writing, ceramics, photography, drawing and painting. They are regularly involved in external projects and activities exploring the world of work and other aspects of the wider community which will help them to choose what to progress to after the course. The programme will be tailored to each individual's needs and around other activities, like work placements where required, and may include placements in local companies or community organisations. Students on Access4Learning will be part of the wider student body at Hackney Community College, working alongside many young people of a similar age from the local community. Teachers and specialist support assistants understand students' needs and will work to ensure students feel safe and secure at all times in this new environment. Where required, students receive one-to-one support in and out of the classroom. The young people are collected individually from the morning transport and safely boarded in the afternoon.
