An Apprenticeship offers the combined benefits of work experience and supported academic learning at college. Apprenticeships are an excellent way of gaining qualifications and workplace experience. As an employed person, you will earn as you learn and you gain practical skills from the workplace. The Apprenticeship you will study will depend on your job role but will follow one of the following pathways:Mechanical manufacturingEngineering maintenance and installationFabrication and weldingMaterials processing and finishingEngineering technical support. As an apprentice you will come to college one day per week to study a qualification. The exact qualification will depend on the engineering pathway chosen for your Apprenticeship and the needs of the individual employer, either an EAL Diploma in Engineering Technology or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Engineering. Both options cover a range of engineering units, such as: engineering principles, engineering techniques, Health and Safety, milling and turning, CAD or engineering design. In addition to this, you will be assessed at work against a suitable NVQ that is relevant to your job role (see pathways above). You will undertake class work relating the theory to the practical training in order to meet the requirements of the NVQ qualification.
