Music A level

UPDATED 20151130 16:18:49

Music is for students who are passionate about the subject and maybe want to progress to higher education and/or employment in the music sector. You will develop your performance and composition skills, your personal instrumental or vocal technique, your communication skills and your teamwork, as well as many other skills. You will learn through a combination of lessons, workshops and rehearsals and will have the opportunity to work with professionals both inside and outside the college. Your learning will be supported by trips to gigs and concerts, as well as a variety of music industry settings such as recording studios and event management companies. You may choose to specialise in either composition or performance. This course is suitable for those with an interest in the subject who have had appropriate grounding. This may be through a variety of routes such as participation in musical activities, study of an instrument, graded examinations, study of music theory and experience of music at GCSE level. In addition, the course offers: enthusiastic and supportive specialist teachers; opportunities to perform in a range of different ensembles; encouragement to take part in college concerts and performances; instrumental lessons for Music Students; room for creativity; opportunity to study Grade 5-8 theory. There are frequent opportunities to perform both in public and within the College. The Christmas concert at Michaelhouse in Cambridge is now well-established, as are the Spring Recital and Summer Showcase. There are several ensembles running as part of the college’s Enrichment Programme, including Choir, Pit Band and Jazz Club, and whatever students’ musical interests may be, whether in classical, pop or rock music, staff are keen to help arrange appropriate concerts, gigs and workshops.
