Students produce individual studio work in which they are expected to follow their own ideas and develop them through research, experimentation and refinement of conceptual, contextual and technical issues. In addition students keep a sketchbook in which they explore their own ideas and research into the work of artists and designers. Issues that need to be examined include the context or cultural circumstances that give rise to particular works or approaches as well as the nature of display and exhibition within the Visual Arts. In producing work students are expected to be able to provide written or verbal explanation or analysis of their work in suitable specialist vocabulary. There is no restriction on the type of media that may be used – however there are financial and technical limits to what can be attempted. Students may work in Drawing and Painting, Sculpture, Installation, Photography/Video etc. or any combination of these. An integral part of the IB Art course is the student’s own personal engagement with, and direction of, their own studies. IB Visual Art students must be motivated and have an inquiring mind. Technical ability is important, but is not a guarantee of success.
