The course is based on four modules. In the Lower Sixth students take The Family and The Sociology of Education which also covers Research Methodology and Theory. In the Upper Sixth students take Sociology of the Media and Crime and Deviance which covers Theory and Methods. Topics covered in these modules include: • Why girls do better in the education system than boys? • Why is the divorce rate so high in modern Britain? • What methods are best suited for looking at the trends in Britain? • The relationship between media output and audience response. • Globalisation. • What types of people commit crime and why? • Which theoretical models give the most accurate and plausible account of how societies/the world operates? Sociology is the study of society and individuals. It is suitable for students who have open, enquiring minds and enjoy debating contemporary issues. Theoretical and political perspectives are applied to the study of topics listed above. A wider knowledge and understanding of society is essential and students must be keen on keeping up to date with news and current affairs. As members of society all students should come to the course equipped with some social knowledge, but through the study of Sociology they will develop a deeper understanding and examine issues that directly affect life in Britain and other areas of the world.
