In the 21st century, the century our children will live in - the century they will, in fact, shape - media literacy will not be a luxury; it will be a necessity.” Linda Ellerbee (journalist, television producer) We live in a ‘media age’, spending much of our lives online, watching films and television, listening to music, playing video games and reading magazines. We depend on the media to entertain, connect and inform us. But what impact is this having on us? How may this be affecting our perceptions of the world? Media Studies teaches you to deconstruct the world around you. As well as exploring important issues, such as stereotyping, patriarchy and political bias, you will develop your creative skills, producing your own media texts. You will learn how to create professional looking images, using software such as Adobe Photoshop as well as specialist lighting and camera equipment. By the end of the course you will have had the chance to build websites, make short films and trailers, as well as a variety of posters and magazine extracts.
