GCSE Music is a very practical course with 60% of your final marks being awarded through performances or compositions. It is important that you are willing to perform and develop your practical skills throughout the course. You should ideally be learning an instrument (could be voice), or be prepared to take lessons. You are entitled to free instrumental/vocal lessons in school if you take this course. There are 3 parts to the course: listening (a 1hr 30m exam in Y11), performing and composing. In preparation for the listening exam, you will study several set works from different musical traditions (including popular music). The course is aimed at all levels of musician, so you can achieve well even if you are a beginner performer. Career pathways include further music study/training, professional performing/gigging musician, teaching, sound engineering, broadcasting, performing arts careers, music technology work, etc. Many universities/employers recognise the benefits of achieving Music qualifications.
