Philosophy literally means 'love of wisdom' and so concerns itself with questioning and seeking truth in whatever area it is being applied to. Ethics is essentially moral philosophy and so is the application of philosophical thinking to how we should act and behave. Philosophy and Ethics is an exciting subject that links in with questions and topics that are a part of our everyday existence. The question of whether genetic engineering is morally correct, or if God exists, are questions we cannot hide from, and Philosophy and Ethics is the subject that allows students to discuss these issues constructively and convincingly. On a practical level, Philosophy and Ethics is a traditional subject, respected by old and new universities alike with transferable skills such as essay writing, analysis, argument and independent research that are useful for a number of jobs/qualifications.
