AS in History

UPDATED 20151120 08:20:38

A level History builds on the skills developed at GCSE, such as the communication of historical knowledge and the ability to analyse historical sources. It requires students to develop an understanding of the nature and purpose of history as a discipline, how historians work, and to carry out a historical enquiry that is independently researched. Key topics that the course covers include: religion and the State in early modern Europe, Luther and the German Reformation, c1515–55, the witch craze in Britain, Europe and North America, c1580–c1750, poverty, public health and the State in Britain, c1780–1939, the making of modern Russia, 1855–1991, and the making of modern China, 1860–1997, and civil rights and race relations in the USA, 1850–2009, and mass media and social change in Britain, 1882–2004. Students carry out an independently researched enquiry to analyse and evaluate interpretations, and organise and communicate their findings. Units are assessed by a range of essay and source papers and there is a coursework unit in A2.
