Chemistry 'AS' & 'A2' (AQA)

UPDATED 20161107 09:05:49

You learn about fundamental principles of Chemistry and the material world - including atomic structure and behaviour of elements and their compounds - and the applications of these principles to develop ideas explored in GCSE Chemistry. AS Chemistry Physical Chemistry (3.1): This unit covers atomic structure including fundamental particles and the behaviour and patterns of elements in chemical compounds. This unit also covers the basic calculations needed for chemistry, as well as an introduction to carbon chemistry, concepts of energy and the kinetics of reactions and equilibria. Inorganic Chemistry (3.2): This unit covers non-carbon based chemistry. You will explore patterns in reactivity and properties repeated in systematic and predictable ways throughout the periodic table with a particular focus on groups 2 & 7. Organic Chemistry (3.3): This module introduces the large topic of carbon based chemistry, or Organic Chemistry. The section will build heavily on work done in GCSE about Alkanes and alkenes. It will also introduce other families of organic compounds and their associated chemistry. A2 Chemistry Physical Chemistry (3.1): This module builds upon knowledge built at AS Level. Thermodynamics and rates of reaction are studies in depth. The final part covers acids and base theory as well as an introduction to electrochemistry. Inorganic Chemistry (3.2): This section will continue the development of periodicity covered in AS 3.2 as well as offering an insight into trends across period 3. IT also explores the rich and colourful component of transition metal chemistry. Organic Chemistry (3.3): This section covers everything from the AS 3.3 section as well as additional organic families such as amines, aromatics and carboxylic acids. This final unit also discusses the methods that are used to determine structure of compounds in organic chemistry.
