The course seeks to encourage candidates to develop their understanding of mathematics and mathematical processes in a way that promotes confidence and fosters enjoyment, develop abilities to reason logically and recognise incorrect reasoning, to generalise and to construct mathematical proofs, recognise how a situation may be represented mathematically and understand the relationship between ‘real world’ problems and standard and other mathematical models, how these can be refined and improved and use mathematics as an effective means of communication. Students will be encouraged to work independently to prepare themselves for University and Higher Education life. It is planned that the course will involve having visits from the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University. The subject is also involved in the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust, Mathematics Challenge. Every year our A Level students attend work shops at the University of Kent. This event, which usually takes place during school holidays or at weekends is a great way to see what degree level maths is all about.
