Mathematics AS/A level

UPDATED 20151116 10:59:16

The A-Level course can be taken over two years and consists of six modules. The AS course can be taken over one year and consists of three modules. YEAR 12 CORE 1: You will discover the fundamentals of calculus. Skills from GCSE will be polished and applied to coordinate geometry and arithmetic sequences CORE 2: Calculus is extended and you will find turning points on graphs and areas under curves. You will solve trigonometric equations and identify rules for geometric sequences. STATISTICS 1: You will calculate measures of average and spread from large data sets. Correlation and regression will be used to identify a connection between two variables. Probabilities will be calculated and used to form distributions. YEAR 13 CORE 3: Here your knowledge of trigonometry is extended and you will start to form proofs. You will meet the log and exponential functions, drawing their graphs and using them to solve equations. You will be able to differentiate more complex functions. CORE 4: Integration methods are explored and you will use many of your skills from Core 3. You will expand brackets using the binomial expansion and will be introduced to vector geometry in 3D STATISTICS 2: You will explore the Binomial and Poisson distributions, using them to calculate probabilities and prove hypotheses. Calculus techniques are used to find measures of average and spread for continuous random variables.
