The course is a combination of coursework and examination: The AS coursework includes: Speech writing, journalism, and short story writing. The AS examination is Grouping Texts and a study of Language and Power, Language and Gender and Language and Technology. The coursework at A2 is an Independent Language study and the creation of a media text. The examination at A2 is Language Change and Child Language Acquisition. This course combines a wide variety of approaches to the study of English Language and aims to develop a wide range of linguistic skills at a high level through the study of both spoken and written English. Students learn to express themselves in speech and writing and explore how to use key concepts relating to language in use. They become skilled at writing creatively for a variety of specific purposes and audiences and there are also opportunities to analyse the ways in which both spoken and written forms of language have changed over time. Students acquire the requisite terminology to allow them to be both self-aware of their own writing as well as critical of spoken and written texts created by others.
