Classical Civilisation is a fascinating and diverse subject including both literature and visual/material culture. It will inspire and motivate students to engage further with the classical world giving them the opportunity to study some of the oldest surviving works of literature in the Western literary canon; the origins of democracy; the birth of theatre; art and artistry. This new Classical Civilisation A Level qualification is being developed for first teaching in September 2017. Only outline course information is available at the present time. Students will develop an understanding of both the ancient Greek and Roman civilisations and materials/topics are likely to be drawn from amongst the following areas: Homer’s Odyssey and Iliad; Greek Tragedy; Virgil’s Aeneid; the material culture of Greece and Rome including art and architecture; Classical thought and philosophy. Study of literature will focus on themes and motifs, characterisation, the contexts in which texts were produced and their reception in the ancient world. The study of material culture will include the appearance, style, content and original location of the examples studied; what the examples of visual/material culture can tell us about the classical world; the ways in which the social, political, religious and cultural context of production impacts on the creation of visual/material culture.
