This course is for complete beginners with little or no knowledge of English. You have a few words but communicate mainly with gestures or a translator. You find it difficult to recognise the English alphabet, write independently or sound out unfamiliar words when reading. You will learn basic practical English for everyday life and for working in the UK and you will make progress with the basic grammar of English. Speaking, listening, reading and writing are all included, with special emphasis on speaking and listening. The course is for students in the early stages of learning English, who already have a small knowledge of the language. It is not for complete beginners. You can already understand and use familiar expressions and basic phrases. You can respond if spoken to slowly. You can write letters and numbers on a line with the correct spacing. You can read simple short texts on familiar topics and obtain information from signs and symbols.
