Sewing Bee - Sewing for Baby

An exciting new course to sew beautiful unique items for a new baby. Students will be learning to use a sewing machine and do some basic hand stitching as they make their own selection of projects for the nursery. Patterns and tuition will be available to make a cot quilt, hanging nappy stacker, tagged comfort blanket, grow bag/baby sleeping bag, hooded towel and cushion. All of these can be personalised with embroidered or appliqued motifs including initials or names. Students will select their own fabrics and work at their own pace on whichever projects they choose. By the end of the course students should be able to :- Be aware of and work to relevant Health and Safety guidelines. Thread up and use a variety of stitches on a sewing machine. Make and press an open seam. Stitch on a button by hand. Make a button hole. Absolute beginners or those who want to brush up their basic skills and sew pieces for a baby.

Entry requirements

You will need: A pen, pencil and notebook, A basic sewing kit if you have one. You may wish to bring your own sewing machine to the class. We have plenty of fabric scraps, trimmings and thread available to make samples, you will need to supply the fabric for the projects you undertake. In the first lesson you will make a cushion to practise the basic techniques you will need during the course. We will have a selection of pink, blue and neutral fabrics in the class for you to buy to make the cushion. Alternatively you may wish to buy fabric of your own, you will need 1/2 a metre of a medium weight cotton or poly cotton along with scraps of any contrasting fabric, ribbons and buttons you may wish to use to decorate. During the first class you will decide on the projects you will cover in the following classes and work out what you need to buy for these. Please feel free to contact the programme manager at the centre if you have any queries about what to buy.
