UPDATED 20151112 11:26:53

Emerging from music hall and other pre-war traditions, popular music formed an important part of Britain's cultural life during World War I. In this course in Maidstone, students will listen to, and discuss, examples of songs that became popular on the 'Home Front'. You will trace how the patriotic optimism of early songs such as, 'Your King and Country Want You' was superseded by the more sombre and sceptical mood of songs such as, 'Oh, It's a Lovely War' as the war progressed. you will also relate changes in the music to key developments on the Western Front. At the end of the course students should be able to: - Define 'Popular Music' in this context, - Identify and discuss a range of popular songs from World War I, - Discuss how changes in both music and lyrics reflected the course of the war Anyone interested in British Social History during the early 20th century and the 1914-18 period in particular.
