Yoga for Mobility - Chair Based

UPDATED 20151112 09:11:33

Many people think the only way to practice yoga is on a mat but it doesn't matter how or where you do yoga. Yoga is about gently stretching and strengthening the body, improving breath function and awareness and, most importantly, bringing the mind to stillness and peace - all of which can be done working from a chair. Seated yoga is a very adaptable form of yoga, growing in popularity because it is a quick and effective way to bring a sense of balance to body and mind, whatever your level of flexibility. Techniques of stretching and strengthening, breath control, relaxation and meditation will be covered. Students will learn how to increase awareness of their body and mind through the physical exercises and the mind-body connection, which is the hallmark of yoga. By the end of the course, students should be able to: perform a sequence, perform breathing practice, perform a relaxation or meditation technique to relieve tension and calm the mind. This course is primarily chair based yoga and is suitable for older people, those with limited mobility, chronic illness or who are recovering from illness and anyone who wants to explore ways to stretch and relieve tension in chair based occupations. Some standing work, using the chair as support if needed, will also be available. If you have a disability and think it may affect your learning in the classroom, or using any of our other services, please speak to us in confidence as soon as possible. We will discuss options with you and do our best to provide the support you would like.
