Walk Winchelsea and the Royal Military Canal

UPDATED 20151112 09:10:59

Winchelsea is a beautiful Sussex village built on the bones of a medieval town. It has an unusual grid-shaped plan and beguiles many visitors. Once a principal port and one of the five Cinq ports as well as a base for smuggling, it is now (just like its sister town Rye) some way from the sea. Our walk will be just over 6 miles and begins in the town following the old cliff line before descending to the contrasting scenery of Romney Marsh. We will then walk to the promenade and along the sea until we reach the seaward end of the canal before returning along its length to Winchelsea. The walk is largely easy going and mostly on the flat after we reach the Marsh. The walk will suit anyone who is capable of walking at least 6 miles and has an interest in the area of Romney Marsh.
