Lip-reading (Mixed Level)

Is this the right course for me? This course is intended for anyone who wishes to develop their lip-reading skills, and improve communication affected by hearing loss. The course, building on knowledge and understanding, will cover a range of subjects including: the theory of lip-reading; the lip reader's alphabet; the significance of homophones and 'moving sideways', and will give the opportunity to practise lip-reading in a safe, positive environment. This course is suitable for those who already have some experience and knowledge. What will I learn? By the end of the course, you should be able to: List consonant and vowel groups and identify visible and less visible shapes Recognise specific lip shapes in eyedrill, sentences/prose and running speech Explain the psychological impact of acquired hearing loss/deafness Apply finger spelling alphabet and visual cueing to support communication Demonstrate positive communication tactics in role play situations How will I learn? Voiced and devoiced presentations; discussion and demonstration, group and pair work. There will be opportunities at every session to practise lip-reading skills. Resources will include flipchart, worksheets, handouts and practical tools. Individual communication needs will be taken into account at all times. Will I gain a qualification? You will not gain a formal qualification but you may receive a Certificate of Attendance and Achievement from your tutor. What can I do next? There will be an opportunity to continue study in the summer term, exploring more complex issues around lip-reading and communication.
