The objectives of the course are To provide candidates with skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific principles and enable them to apply these to various situations and vocational contexts. To enable candidates to appreciate and evaluate the social, economic and environmental impact that scientific work has on society. To prepare candidates for further study on a course in science or in a science-related subject or for training in a science-related occupation. To develop candidates skills in carrying out practical techniques and following procedures used in vocational contexts Scientific research, development and production bring major benefits to improving health care, raising the standard of living and contributing to almost every aspect of daily life. This course teaches science in the context of every day situations and science related industries and looks at how it impacts upon social, economic and environmental issues. Topics include Science at work Practical Techniques and Health and safety Qualitative and quantitative analysis Monitoring the activity of the human body Ethical issues of diagnosis and treatment Cell and molecules and cellular research Preparation and analysis of chemical products Manufacturing processes Investigating Scientists’ work Sampling testing and processing In A2 students will be allowed to choose one unit from the following: Synthesising organic chemicals Materials for a purpose Electrons in action The mind and the brain Ecology and managing the environment Assessment The AS level consists of 3 mandatory units each contributing 33% of the total marks.
