Learning a foreign language at A- level is a challenging but highly rewarding experience. We encourage you to develop your understanding of the spoken and written forms of the language in a variety of formats, to communicate confidently, clearly and imaginatively using increasingly accurate, complex and varied language. You will also increase your sensitivity to language and language learning, developing critical insights into, and contact with, the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of countries where the language is spoken. You will learn to use the foreign language to analyse, evaluate, argue a case, justify, and develop arguments and present viewpoints in speech and writing. The courses provide a good basis for the further study of foreign languages at degree level or equivalent. They also provide coherent, satisfying and worthwhile courses of study for students who do not progress to Higher Education, but who require practical use of the foreign language. A foreign language is a valuable tool for the future and can lead to a wealth of opportunities both professionally and socially. To qualify for the A-level courses you will need to gain a B or above at GCSE (or a C in exceptional circumstances if agreed by the Head of Modern Foreign Languages) and have a good basic knowledge of the grammatical structure of the language concerned. There will be many opportunities for you to pursue your own interests through the medium of the foreign language and the course covers topics such as changes in society, music, equality of the sexes, the role of the media, politics, history and much more. However, you must be prepared to experiment, work independently and expand upon the variety of stimuli provided in class. You will be required to purchase a bilingual dictionary and texts for the literature component of the course. The Modern Languages Department looks forward to working with you!
